Motorola A840 - Phone Review CDMA or GSM with the Motorola A840

07 October 2005
Written by Tom Rucinski

Problems/Issues?

Heavy and has a Large size

Despite not having all the latest and greatest features, the A840 is rather a large and heavy phone. There are many handsets out there that have much better specifications and are much smaller. The only excuse is that Motorola have managed to combine GSM and CDMA into one phone however, this in my opinion is a pretty weak excuse.

Battery life

This is by far the most disappointing factor in this phone. Nearly all other problems could be forgiven but to have a handset that you need to charge each night is pretty hopeless considering that this phone does not have the power requirements of additional features present in top-of-the-range models (Bluetooth, high resolution screen etc.) A second battery or constantly keeping a charger around is recommended.

No Bluetooth or Infra-red

The Motorola A840 does not have any Bluetooth or Infra-red facilities so this does limit one’s options in terms of connectivity. In particular Bluetooth seems to be an essential feature on phones due to the popularity of Bluetooth headsets and car kits.

Camera quality

Good enough for quick happy snaps, to send to friends, for the photo phone book but don’t expect to be getting great results from printing photos from this phone. Until handsets get better lenses, sensors and optical zooms then we will continue seeing mediocre photos coming from camera phones.

Finger prints over front panel

Just a small issue so that readers are aware, that the black front panel is an area likely to be prone to smudging and get dirty quickly so extra care or an external case might be needed to keep the exterior clean.
