Samsung i600 BlackJack - Phone Review Samsung i600 BlackJack

Problems/Issues?

Slow user interface

The Samsung i600 runs the Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone Edition operating system, with a 220MHz processor. The processor is a tad slower than most other Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system handsets, and this does show when using the handset.

There is quite a bit of lag when using the file browser to browse the contents of the memory, and also while jumping through the menu system. Lag is never a desirable feature of any mobile phone!

Jog dial is sharp and hard to push in

The i600 has a 3-way jog dial on the right hand side of the handset which sort of acts like the navigational keypad under the display. Because of the way that we instinctively hold mobile phones, many users find a jog dial an extremely useful feature on a mobile phone.

Unfortunately, the i600’s jog dial is sharp to the touch and very hard to push inwards (which selects/opens an item), making it quite impractical to use. The inwards push may loosen up with wear, but that doesn’t take away the fact that the actual piece of plastic is sharp on the fingers and quite uncomfortable to use!

No microSD card in sales package & small internal memory

With just over 50MB of internal memory, I really did expect a microSD memory card in the sales package of the i600. It’s a shame the i600 only has ~50MB of memory – the i320N (which is the i600’s predecessor) had a whopping 120MB!

The handset has a hot-swappable microSD memory card slot, and memory cards are becoming increasingly popular with users who quickly need to transfer data from one device to another – just pop out the card and slot it into a memory card reader.

Although you won’t need to take out a loan to buy a microSD memory card, it’s still nice when the manufacturer thinks of the consumer and includes memory cards with the handset. If you transfer a few MP3’s and videos to the i600 and then capture some images and video using the integrated camera, the memory is going to run out very quickly.
