Embedded about 3cm from the top of the phone in a small silver panel next to the word “Nokia” is the 6220s internal CIF camera. CIF cameras are very common in mobile phones today, because they offer reasonable quality images, and are able to capture video as well. The 6220 supports video capture, so you can use the camera and catch maximum 20 second video clips with audio.
The 6220’s CIF camera can capture images at normal CIF size, 352 x 288 pixels. An image that size is the “Standard” photo option on the 6220. The “Portrait” option makes the photo smaller, only 80 x 96, but these photos can be attached to entries in the phonebook and you can see your caller when they call.
Pressing the up button when the phone is idle (not keypad locked) will start up the camera on standard mode. If you want to access the different options of the camera and the video, self timer, night-mode, or portrait modes you can go via the new “Media” menu option. In here you can also change the quality of the picture to Basic, Normal, and High. See below for examples of photos and a video shot by the 6220.
A night mode option is available on the Nokia 6220 for when you need to take photos in low light situations. This doesn’t mean you can take photos in pitch black, but you can if the light is lower than normal. The frame-rate of the preview window will be lowered but the image will look brighter. The self-timer function will count down 10 seconds once activated, so you can take a group shot with you in it as well!
Pictures that have been taken on the 6220 can be edited in several ways. You can add clip-art to the pictures like on the 7250i, and change the contrast of the photo. These photos and videos can also be sent via MMS or e-mail to anyone in the globe that supports MMS. When you send the picture or video via MMS you can add audio as well; and of course text. =)
Take a look below at images I captured with the 6220. The camera is a CIF camera, not VGA, so the quality may be less than you expected when it has been blown up and viewed on a computer screen. On your mobile phone screen with something like 4,096 the picture will look alright. You can the issues I had with the 6220’s camera in the Problems/Issues section.
