I was a bit disappointed when I found out that the ROKR was only going to come with a VGA digital camera. Those types are very outdated now, and even a 1mpx digital camera would have done the ROKR much more justice. 640 x 480 pixel images just aren’t what they used to be! Never the less you’ve got to make do with what’s there, and the E1 has support for video and image capture at three different resolutions.

There are not any additional features like quality or black and white/sepia/negative, which leads me to believe that Motorola spent a little too much time on the music side of things and forgot about some of the other important aspects! Many users will find this a major let-down, but hopefully the next ROKR handset will be a little bit more featured in this department.

The maximum resolution on the E1 is 640 x 480 pixels. You can also select to capture in 160 x 120 and 320 x 240 pixels. The handset does have a night mode function and a flash light for additional light. An auto, indoor, and outdoor setting can also be applied to all images, as seen in the example shots below. 4x zoom is also offered, as is 2x.

The camera application is very self-explanatory. The two soft keys are used to change settings and you can also use the dedicated camera key on the side of the handset to capture images. My only problem with this is that the button is a little too flat, and hard to find if you’re not 100% sure where it is. You can hold down the dedicated camera key to launch the camera application or browse to it via the menu.

In terms of quality, I found that the images were a little “foggy” and didn’t seem to focus very well. Even on the display they looked a little bit worse for wear, but if reduced for MMS they were quite usable.
