JAVA i-MODE SOON TO COMPETE
WITH PC
19 February 2001 By Daniel Cheung
NTT DoCoMo Inc. has announced it will soon launch
a mobile phone called Digital Mova 503i that supports Java i-mode software. The
release could mark the evolution of mobile phones from merely voice-transfer
gadgets to "rich and secure" information devices that may compete with
personal computers. New services, such as animated games, software
for chats, programmes for retrieving and displaying stock prices, and business-support programmes such as GroupWare will accompany the release of the
Java-capable mobile phone. The i-mode service now has more than 15 million
users. This is an impressive number considering that the i-mode service
was only launched in February 1999.
