CDMA in Australia is not just a network infrastructure replacement, or one to simply fulfil the needs of our outback users who find GSM performing nowhere as good reception-wise.
Telstra has once again taken the initiative of launching a new service for their CDMA 1X network. To be known as Telstra Mobile Loop, it will provide customers with a wide range of high-resolution games, chat, ringtones and email with compelling and engaging sound.
Based on the BREW application platform, customers can browse a wide catalogue of applications from their mobile phone, trial and purchase applications and download them via their phones.
Telstra Group Managing Director, Consumer and Marketing, Mr Ted Pretty, said the new service satisfied the 3 customer requirements - being affordable, practical and relevant - which should make it the most appealing of its kind to customers.
“In an Australian first, customers can now affordably access and download appealing and relevant applications via their mobile phone with very easy to use functionality and, importantly, the phone can be used to communicate with all other mobiles and is available for purchase today from select Telstra shops,” he said.
The following Applications are available today on the Mobile Loop service:
- Jumbuck - Power Chat - chat rooms with text, icons and characters
- Modtones by Faith West Inc.
- SEGA Mobile - SEGA Snowboarding
- Sony Online Entertainment - Everquest Hero’s Call
- Mattel - Magic 8 Ball, Magic Date Ball, Uno
- Jumbuck - Gothic Graveyard, Soul Daddy, Bare Knuckle Boxing,
- Tourmaline Networks - Soda-pop Mail - Bigpond, Telstra.com, Yahoo!, plus many more favourite email providers
- JAMDAT Mobile - Bowling, Bejeweled, Mummy Maze, Puck, and Solitaire,
- Summus - Nine-ball, Ultimate Golf Challenge, exego
- Eyematic - MyGenie
- XIISigns - StarScroll Personal Horoscope
- Embience- Drinks Nation
- Reaxion - Fight Hard 3D
Future applications expected to become available shortly will come from Foxtel, AFL, Rugby World Cup, Sensis, Sony Music Australia and Yahoo! Australia & New Zealand.
Telstra says that their Mobile Loop pricing structure is flexible and affordable, giving customers a number of purchase choices including the choice of paying per application downloaded with customers seeing upfront what they are paying for each application or paying a general subscription fee. As a special introductory offer Telstra Mobile Loop applications and information services will be free of charge until May 31st 2003.
Initially these services will be available on Samsung’s lightweight and affordable T100-looking “Rainbow” CDMA handset
(SCH-A561), with new phones, such as the futuristic Samsung Rotating Camera Phone (RCP - or
SCH-X780), becoming available in the middle of the year. These new Samsung phones are also the first of many to support the BREW platform for mobile applications.
For those interested in all this, Telstra has set up a web site that will have application simulators and demonstrations of all the products and services available. This site can be reached at
