Not CIF, but a VGA standard camera is positioned on the back of the Nokia 6600 for your image taking pleasure. The main display is used as the viewfinder, and a 2x digital zoom for both still images and videos can be utilized at your fancy. The phone is pre-set to have the “Camera” application as one of the soft keys, so you can jump straight to it without having to go via the menu.

Still images are what most people take using their cameras phone, and the 6600 enables you to do this and get great looking photos in the end. The VGA standard resolution is 640 x 480, and that is the maximum that the 6600 can capture. Three other options are available though, portrait mode (80 x 96 pixels) and night mode at 640 x 480 pixels. The portrait size photos can be attached to names in your phonebook and they will show up when the contact calls. All three formats can be used for a background, and sent via MMS or e-mail to whoever you want.

The video function of the 6600 can capture video at QCIF and subQCIF resolutions, that is 176 x 144 or 128 x 96 pixels. The limit on video is 9 seconds, but you can increase that with some programs that are available on the internet. The videos can contain audio as well, and be sent by MMS or e-mail. They are saved in the 3GPP format which can be played on the handset using RealOne or on a computer using RealPlayer/QuickTime.

Video files and image files can be stored on the internal memory or MMC card, whichever you choose. The approximate file size for standard images is about 20kB, and a 9 second video file will take up about 100kB. Working that out, you can store over 300 standard images - heaps! If you ever fill that up, you can then just transfer the images to a PC or other store device using whatever connection method you choose.
