Overview
Nokia isn’t the only one that is coming up with new handsets recently. Previously, we previewed both the T39m and T68 - where both handsets scored well in most departments. The recently launched T65 is no exception - with its design targeting users who demand simplicity but also the right level of functionality. And all this has to come at an affordable price tag.
The T65 is not something you’ll expect from Ericsson. It’s very flat - or wide - and probably considered quite different from its predecessors thanks to the phone’s overall curvature design. The flatter or wider design of the phone makes allowance for the larger greyscale LCD and makes holding the phone less stressing thanks also to its lightweight design.

A new design concept of the T65 is its non-removable internal battery. One of the probable reasons why the battery has become non-removable is to decrease the chances of “wear and tear” between the battery contacts on both the battery and phone. A major downside to this is when you run out of battery, you have no other choice but to get home quickly and charge up the phone - since you can’t have a spare battery! Subsequently, the SIM card insertion point is now located at the phone’s top side near the earpiece as a slide-out mechanism.
Getting around on the T65 was easier than on the T39m - thanks to its bigger screen (which can fit at least twice as more lines!) Navigating around the phone using the 4-direction (up, down, left, right) key further assists in the phone’s ease of use. A turquoise-coloured hot key, located below the ‘answer’ button, acts as a fast key for accessing relevant functions whilst performing specific functions on the phone. For example, when you are typing an SMS message, this hot key will bring up functions such as adding special characters, changing the character set, or looking through the dictionary for the correct word when T9 is used.

Unfortunately, I found the phone’s keypad quite difficult to be able to use properly. These included situations whilst trying to create phone book entries (entering names and numbers) and typing SMS messages using the built-in T9 predictive input function. The problem becomes extremely irritating when I start typing text faster.
The T65 also comes with a WAP browser - which can also operate over GPRS. I welcome this availability as faster WAP connections are becoming a greater reality for not just people who can afford expensive and featured-packed phones. The larger greyscale screen can display WAP pages with greater depth (that is, several shades of grey versus purely black and white) and ability to present a greater amount of text (depending on the text size chosen).
