Sony Ericsson W800i - Future phone

Sony Ericsson W800i

Sony Ericsson W800i

01 March 2005
Written by Albert Malik

Today Sony Ericsson began the revival of the walkman brand with the first in line of a new set of Walkman-branded music phones – the W800i. Music is what this phone is all about, and besides the small, orange music access key in the middle of the phone, you get a huge 512 megabytes of memory bundled with the phone in the form of a Memory Stick Duo card to store a good 100-150 songs in MP3 format. The candybar phone also supports the AAC file format used by the Apple iPod, with up to 250 songs storable on the memory card if in AAC. And if you don’t want to bring a music collection along, the W800 can tune into FM stations for live music or talk radio, whatever you preference may be. It also comes with high quality stereo earphones and is said to play for up to 30 hours straight if the phone component is deactivated. Expect 15 hours of playtime when the phone is on, however. The Disk2Phone software, included in the sales package, will allow simple transferring of music to the W800i to make it as painless as possible to listen to any manner of music or sound.

But that’s not all! Being a modified variant of the K750i tri-band phone, the W800i comes complete with a two megapixel CMOS camera with auto-focus, 4x digital zoom, and flash lamp. The W800i is another phone with a dual-front design, meaning that the phone can be held like a regular digital camera to take pictures. This device is still a phone at heart, with support for messaging standards such as SMS and MMS and supports GPRS for fast internet access using WAP 2.0 compliant webpages. Its screen is 176x220 pixels and supports 262,144 colours, helping to take two megapixel images clearly.

Weighing in at less than 100 grams and supporting tri-band 900/1800/1900 MHz GSM networks, the W800i will likely be showcased at the upcoming CeBit electronics exhibition in Hannover, Germany, in the next couple of weeks. It should ship to the European market in the third quarter later this year. Besides the international ‘i’ variant, there will also be a W800c with Chinese font support for China released around the same time.
