Sony Ericsson J210i

14 June 2005
Written by David Hall

Not forgetting the low-end consumer market, Sony Ericsson have released the J200i at CommunicAsia yesterday along side the Z520i and S600i models. A simple yet functional handset, the J210i has "everything a good phone should have." The ergonomically designed handset is simple yet sophisticated.

The single, dedicated ring tone speakerphone at the back of the J210i ensures you never miss a call, especially with the 32-chord polyphonic ring tones pumping through! Some chimes and songs are pre-installed, and there's no limit to what's available on the internet or through WAP websites. A melody composer is even supplied to whip up your own creations!

The J210i has a small 128 x 128 pixel display, at high quality 65,536 colours. This is the generally accepted size for low-end handsets these days, and is perfect for the J210i as it doesn't include an integrated camera. A picture gallery and phonebook can store your images, which can be transferred from a PC or laptop. The J210i has MMS support, allowing you to receive images from friends and family. You can also send MMS from the J210i with GPRS support.

On the subject of messaging, the J210i has long-SMS support, which separates your messages when sending, only to be combined again on the recipients handset, allowing to you fit everything in! Predictive text (T9) speeds up the messaging process, support with both SMS and MMS messages (and other text-boxes located in the user interface). EMS messaging support is network dependant, but is supported on the J210i.

The user interface of the J210i is icon based, with the main menu consisting of 9 icons. All icons are animated and self-explanatory. Sony Ericsson handsets are very easy to operate and you'll be a pro if you've never used one before in minutes. The menu is navigated with the joystick, with short cuts offered from the idle display. The UI can be themed, and wallpapers applied.

Animated start-up themes personalize the handset, and full force (vibration) Java games cure boredom in an instant.

Be reminded of those special times with the organizer application. It can store anniversaries, birthdays, notes, and other general information with ease. A calculator, to-do list, clock, timer, multi-entry photo phonebook, call list and conference call support also feature.

A WAP 1.2.1 browser connects via GPRS to bring data streaming to your handset. An Infrared port and HSCSD allow for connecting the J210i to a PC for modem usage.

The J210i is prepared for any globetrotting you have planned, with GSM 900, 1800, and 1900MHz network support. You can expect this stylish little entry-level handset in the 4th quarter, along with the other three new Sony Ericssons.
