Nokia 6170 - Future phone

Nokia 6170

Nokia 6170

16 July 2004
Written by Mike Meers

The two ‘S’ words - sophistication and stylishness. These seem two be the two main words that Nokia have followed with their newest range of handsets. The 6170 is a clam-shell phone which expands on what the new 2650 seems to have lacked. Metal surfaces and two bright displays top off the external side of things, and on the inside you’ll find heaps of features. New to hit Australia on Telstra & Optus is Push-to-Talk, which is also available on the 6170.

The main display on this handset features 65,536 colours within 128 x 160 pixels. This is a nice improvement from the now disappointing 4,096 colour screens. The bright TFT LCD display can show up to 6 lines of text at once, displaying all information equally. The mini-display, or the display on the external side of the 6170 is 4,096 colours (better than the 256 colour external screens), and will be able to show all sorts of information - caller ID, time, date, battery life, signal strength, etc. Within 96 x 65 pixels a colour wallpaper can be defined - very personalized! Three soft keys and a 5-way directional key with user configurable left and right buttons aid in control of the phone.

The integrated camera on the 6170 can capture VGA resolution images, which are at 640 x 480 pixels. The phone’s both displays can be used as the viewfinders, so the external display will be great for self-portraits. The normal standard/night/portrait photos can be captured, and you can also capture videos. Streaming video can be played as well as the locally saved files. An image editor can open files and add frames, and other clip-art files. Themes can be applied to the UI, changing the wallpaper, screensaver, colour scheme, and ring tone (polyphonic 40-chords).

The Pop-Port™ interface on the 6170 can be used to connect the phone to a computer using a high-speed USB data-cable. Wireless connections can be established over a GPRS, HSCSD, or EDGE protocol. Browsing is done using the WAP 2.0 browser which does support xHTML pages. SyncML can be used to synchronize over-the-air. Push-to-Talk enables you to communicate directly and instantly with other users on the network, over a wireless connection protocol. PTT doesn’t need the other party or parties to answer before the call goes through, and it is generally played through the loudspeaker.

PIM applications and voice functions will keep life under control. Some PIM applications on the 6170 include an alarm clock, calendar, calculator, to-do list, countdown timer, and wallet. Pre-installed Java applications and games can be removed at your content, and can also be downloaded from WAP pages on the mobile internet.

MMS, EMS, SMS and e-mail can be sent and received on the 6170. Up to 6 SMS/EMS messages (that’s 885 characters) can be sent at once. Send and receive MMS messages with sound, video, pictures, and text up to 100kB in size on the 6170 - you can send to other compatible devices or an e-mail address. E-mail over SMS or through the Java applet can connect to your work or personal mailboxes. Instant messages and presence enhanced contacts can be sent/viewed.

You can use the handset on many continents thanks to the compatibility with three frequencies - GSM 900/1800/1900MHz. The Nokia 6170 is expected to start selling on the market in the 4th quarter of 2004.
